Man caught on surveillance putting woman in choke hold at ATM

WEST MELBOURNE, Fla. — Authorities said they have arrested a man who they believe put a woman in a choke hold at a West Melbourne Bank of America ATM on Haven Avenue Monday night.

Tuesday afternoon police said they arrested Scott Deason, 44, at his Annette Drive residence after his family members called 911 to report that he looked like the person in surveillance photos.

"We  received a call from his girlfriend and his family and they felt the need to do the right thing and call us," said Lt. Richard Cordeau, with the West Melbourne Police Department.

Surveillance photos show the man, who police said is Deason, with his arm wrapped around the woman's neck. Police said Deason threatened the 20-year-old woman.

"I have never heard of that around here before, it is surprising. I feel sorry for her," said bank customer Nadia Chavez.

Police said others felt sympathy for the woman.

"The suspect's family, girlfriend did express some concern for the victim," said Cordeau.

Police said the woman was able to hit the panic button on her keys. They said that is when Deason ran off.

The woman told officers he was armed with a hammer.

Police said the woman is fine. Some bank customers said they were bothered by reports of an attack.

"I'm always scared. When you walk up to one they could be hiding anywhere," said bank customer Sabrina Smith.

Police said they found physical evidence at Deason's home that links him to the crime.

Police said Deason will be booked into the Brevard County Jail. He is being charged with armed robbery and false imprisonment.
