NEW SMYRNA BEACH, Fla. — A judge granted the motion Friday for a mental health evaluation for a man accused of killing his grandmother inside her New Smyrna Beach home.
Patrick Campbell, 27, was charged with first-degree murder in the death of his 64-year-old grandmother, Darlene Robertson.
Eyewitness News was told that Campbell suffers from paranoid schizophrenia.
According to reporter Blaine Tolison, Campbell told the judge that he did not need a public defender.
Initially Campbell would not acknowledge his name when the judge asked.
From the start of the hearing, he uttered confusing statements about being a special agent and target.
Judge: “You’re Mr. Campbell?”
Campbell: “Sir, I, I’m actually a United States agent. I have completed a sanctioned target and I have a sanction in hand for the matter at hand.”
Campbell said he didn’t need a public defender but the judge assigned him one anyway.

Campbell turned himself in to the FBI Thursday afternoon.
Officials said Robertson was found dead Wednesday with wounds from blunt force trauma to her head and cuts to her stomach in her New Smyrna Beach home.
Authorities said Campbell confessed to killing his grandmother and was charged with murder and grand theft in reference to Robertson's vehicle, which was missing when police showed up to her home.
Police said Campbell was driving his grandmother's car when he showed up to his attorney's office ready to talk to the FBI.
The attorney said Campbell seemed like himself when he asked to speak with agents about his grandmother's death.
"He behaved appropriately and, um, and he was very, very courteous and kind and just wanted to talk to somebody in the federal bureau," said Catherine Drees.
WFTV searched Campbell's social media accounts and found a post from last month reading, "I hate the devil and wish she would go away."
Campbell did not say anything as police took him away.
His attorney described him as anything but a killer.
"He's very, very bright. He's a very kind and good person. He cares about others," said Drees.
Investigators have not released a motive for the crime.
Campbell is being held without bail at the Volusia County Jail.
