Marion County applies for $25,000 grant for bear-resistant garbage cans

(Georgia DNR)

MARION COUNTY, Fla. — Marion County officials have applied for a $25,000 grant to help pay for bear-resistant garbage cans.

The grant would come from the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission as part of a program aimed at reducing interactions between people and bears.

The Marion County Commission voted Tuesday to apply for the grant.

Officials said most of the funding for the program comes from the sale of Florida’s “Conserve Wildlife” specialty license plates.
