Masked, armed men break into million-dollar Winter Garden home

WINTER GARDEN, Fla. — Deputies are investigating a home invasion in Winter Garden Wednesday.

Authorities said it happened at about 4 a.m. on Avenue of the Rushes.

Investigators believe the home was targeted. Deputies said the home is owned by Gregory Monroe, a quadriplegic man, and that his nephew, his caretaker and his nephew's 8-year-old son were in the house during the invasion.

"The caregiver, the nephew and the boy were up. They were hanging out playing video games. This is when it occurred when the guys came into the house," Orange County deputy Cpl. Joe Covelli said.

Surveillance video showed two masked men get dropped off on the corner and approach the home.

Deputies said the masked men armed with handguns broke into the million-dollar home and demanded money.

"It's a great area. It's really safe. It's unusual for that to happen," neighbor Scott Larson said.

Deputies said the caretaker and her son were locked in the bathroom and the nephew's hands were bound and he was forced to show them around the house.

"Very surprising there's petty theft, petty crime everywhere, but this is the most severe in the last eight years. It's scary," one neighbor said.

Deputies said the men fled with some cash and maybe jewelry from the home, but investigators are still working to find what they took.

"I think they were probably targeted. Probably and inside job or somebody that knows them," Larson said.

Neighbors said they were thankful no one was hurt.

"I know him pretty well. We talk, he's pretty quiet, he knows the kids. I hope he's OK," one neighbor said.

Investigators said there are cameras in the home and they are hoping that video will show something, but the men were wearing masks and gloves.

Investigators said they are aware some caretakers have been let go recently and are looking to see if there are any connections to that.
