, Fla. — Hundreds of handwritten letters honoring veterans and first responders and more than 1,750 donated supplies were among the results of a community initiative at Melbourne Square.
The shopping center announced Friday that its “250 Acts of Community” initiative generated more than 5,000 acts of service and community engagement between May and September.
The effort brought together retailers, local organizations and residents as part of America250, the nationwide commemoration of the country’s 250th anniversary.
Letters, donations and community events
According to Melbourne Square, the initiative included:
- 629 handwritten letters honoring veterans and first responders
- 143 American flags collected for proper retirement
- More than 1,750 items donated through pet and veteran supply drives
- An estimated $7,250 in sponsorships and in-kind contributions from local businesses and community partners
Other activities included blood drives, retailer-led fundraising, volunteer opportunities, wellness programs and family events.
“It has been inspiring to see our retailers, community partners, and residents come together to honor those who serve, support local families, and make a lasting difference in our community,” said Alisha Kish, Melbourne Square’s marketing and community engagement manager.
Mural honors local heroes
The initiative also included the unveiling of an America250 mural by local artist and Brevard County Sheriff’s Office law enforcement officer Lance Behringer.
The mural honors veterans, law enforcement officers, firefighters and other community heroes. Approximately 175 guests attended the ribbon-cutting, according to the mall.
Melbourne Square was one of seven shopping centers participating in the initiative organized by owner Second Horizon Capital, which acquired the mall in March.
Across those properties, the company reported more than 15,000 acts of service and community engagement involving more than 150 community organizations.
