ORLANDO, Fla.,None — Valencia College is apologizing after a mistake allowed the personal information of 9,000 current and prospective students to be posted online.
The school said an Excel spreadsheet with the students' names, address, date of birth, and student IDs was listed online on a password-protected website.
Eventually, it lost its password protection, which means anyone could see the information.
Valencia College sent out emails to the affected students that said, "They deeply regret that this happened," and the students' files did not include their social security numbers or any financial information.
Students told WFTV they're still concerned because their ID numbers would give crooks access to all types of important files.
"That is the other thing all that financial information and from that financial aid page they could go on and get social security numbers and tax information," student Kaylyn Cunningham said.
"I do not use financial aid. They could actually get my credit card number that is in my account," student Erica Iafratto said.
"I would be surprised if they did not sue the company," student Mariah Woessner said.
The information was posted for seven months before the school found out and it was taken down.
The school does not plan to take any legal action against the sub-contractor of the website because the school does not believe anyone's information was used.
