Mom, boyfriend face charges after toddler's death

LAKELAND, Fla. — A central Florida mother and her boyfriend face child abuse charges after her 15-month-old son died.
 
The Ledger of Lakeland reports 24-year-old Victoria Reyes and 48-year-old Kevin Meadows are in the Polk County Jail. Deputies arrested Meadows on Monday. Reyes has been jailed since Feb. 21.
 
Deputies say Mitchell Peters died Aug. 25.
 
Arrest reports indicated Reyes and Meadows made conflicting and changing statements as investigators tried to learn what happened to the boy.
 
Records show Mitchell was covered in vomit when he was found unresponsive around 5:30 p.m. The medical examiner said there were contusions above his left eye, on his forehead and on top of his head, causing internal bleeding and brain swelling. Cuts on his lips were consistent with being hit.
 
Meadows isn't the boy's father.
