Crews to spray for mosquitos in Brevard County

MELBOURNE, Fla. — Crews with Brevard County Mosquito Control have been working six to seven days a week to combat an anticipated surge in the mosquito population. In May, rainfall around the Melbourne has been about three inches above normal.

There used to be plenty of dry areas for mosquitoes to lay their eggs, but now they’ve found new spaces. For one resident, the mosquitoes drove him to the second floor of his south Melbourne home.

“When I go downstairs I have to wear a mosquito net over my head and wear a long sleeve nylon jacket and long pants. Otherwise, they eat you alive,” said resident Richard Ambrose.

WFTV visited the home and mosquitoes were everywhere. According to Mosquito Control, salt marsh mosquitoes are ‘aggressive biters’ during both day and evening hours.

Fortunately, they’re not known to transmit disease during human contact. However, that doesn’t make them any less of a nuisance.

“The last couple of days have been the worst it ever was, and I’ve been here for nineteen and half years,” said Ambrose.

This weekend, Mosquito Control will conduct a nighttime aerial spraying in southern Brevard County. Workers will also use an insecticide to kill mosquito larvae.
