New scam targets residents using fake package delivery notices

ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. — The Orange County Sheriff's Office is warning of a scam where residents are receiving a fake package delivery notices on their front door.

The bogus delivery notices are being found at homes in the Waterford Lakes area of east Orange County, deputies said.

Surveillance video taken from one home shows a woman walking up to the front door with the notice and leaving without ringing the doorbell. She then appears to walk to the home next door.

"It was yellowish," said one resident who received the notice. "I only order through legit shipping companies, so to me it looked like trash right away."

The fake delivery attempt notice tells the resident to dial a phone number in order to retrieve the package. But deputies said when the victim calls the number, a person will begin to ask personal questions.

"Next thing you know is you're giving social security number, date of birth, things like that," said Menachem Green, with the Orange County Sheriff's Office.

Investigators said because it's the holiday season, many people are expecting packages and are eager to receive their items.

"A reputable company isn't going to ask for that information over the phone," said Green.

Deputies are urging residents not to give out any personal information and instead report suspicious activity.
