OCALA, Fla. — Businesses operating within Ocala city limits no longer need to obtain or renew a city business tax receipt after the city eliminated the requirement and associated fees.

The change, adopted through Ordinance No. 2027-1, applies to both existing businesses renewing their receipts and new businesses opening within the city.

City staff are updating records, online services and business tax receipt information to reflect the change.

Some businesses may qualify for refunds

Businesses that already paid fees for the current renewal period may be eligible for a refund, according to the city’s announcement Friday.

City staff will review payments to determine eligibility and begin processing applicable refunds by Jan. 14, 2027. The announcement does not guarantee refunds for every business that paid.

Other business requirements remain in place

The ordinance eliminates the city’s business tax receipt requirement. Businesses must still meet applicable local, state and federal licensing, permitting, zoning and building requirements.

Business owners with questions about the ordinance, refund eligibility or permitting can contact the Ocala Growth Management Department at 352-629-8421.
