OneBlood urges 'immediate blood donations' as Hurricane Irma looms

ORLANDO, Fla. — As Hurricane Irma looms large while making its way toward land, blood center OneBlood has asked for immediate donations to meet the expected need from the storm.

The not-for-profit blood center, which serves Florida and most of the Southeast U.S., said in a statement that “It must begin storm preparations now.”

“The most critical time for blood donations is prior to any storm in order to sustain the blood supply during and immediately after the event,” the center said.

OneBlood has already been called upon by officials in Puerto Rico for help and the center immediately responded with 100 units of blood, the statement said.

All blood types are needed, but there is an increased need for O Negative and O Positive blood, as well as platelet and plasma donations.
