Orange County Animal Services to limit stray intakes next week

ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. — Orange County Animal Services will temporarily limit the types of stray animals it accepts as construction continues on the county’s new animal shelter.

The county said the changes will begin Monday, Oct. 5, and are expected to last about one week while crews install utility, fire and stormwater infrastructure near the shelter’s pet receiving area.

During that time, Animal Services said it will only accept stray animals with urgent medical needs or concerning behavior.

The county is asking residents who find healthy, friendly stray pets to temporarily care for them or try to reunite them with their owners until normal intake resumes.

Animal Services said the shelter will otherwise remain open, including for regular adoptions.

The new 123,000-square-foot shelter is expected to be completed in fall 2027 and will include 265 dog kennels and space for nearly 200 cats.
