ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. — Orange County deputies want the public’s help after a 19-year-old was shot and killed overnight in her apartment complex.
Investigators say they got the shooting call Thursday morning and responded to the Lorenzo at East Mil Apartments near Rio Grande Avenue around 12:55 am.
Deputies say they found the victim, 19-year-old Shoumana Abelanda Toutoute, shot on the scene. According to her family, she was shot while sleeping in her bedroom.
The sheriff’s office says they took the victim to the hospital, but she sadly did not make it.
The family returned to their apartment complex around noon Thursday, still wearing their hospital stickers, distraught and in shock.
Toutoute’s stepfather wasn’t ready to interview on camera, but told Channel 9 that the 19-year-old was studying to be a doctor.
The family had come to Orlando from Haiti and told Channel 9 they had no idea who would open fire on their home.
Toutoute’s stepfather told Channel 9 he was sleeping in the room next door when he heard the barrage of gunfire.
At least four bullets pierced the window of Toutoute’s bedroom.
The Orange County Sheriff’s Office said detectives are following leads, but said they could use the public’s help in this case.
According to deputies, “there is no indication from anything they have learned so far that would lead investigators to believe anyone in that home would have been targeted for violence.”
Investigators are asking anyone with information about this crime, or anyone who witnessed the moments leading up to or following the shooting, to call the OCSO non- emergency line at 407-836-4357 or Crimeline at 800-423-8477.
