ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. — The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is investigating a deputy-involved shooting on Sunday evening in Orange County.
Deputies said the shooting happened at an apartment complex on Kingsgate Drive, near John Young Parkway and Oak Ridge Road.
Watch Orange County Sheriff John Mina give an update on the shooting:
Orange County Sheriff John Mina said the incident started after a man, identified as Edenilson Urbina, 18, on a motorcycle was pulled over at a gas station for a traffic stop for an illegal tag.
Deputies said after Smith pulled over, he took off running.
Mina said some sort of “confrontation” happened, and the deputy, identified as Deputy Sheriff Bruce Stolk, shot Smith because he was in fear for his life after he believed the man was reaching for a weapon.
Stolk was not injured in the shooting, Mina said.
Smith was shot in the leg and taken to a hospital for treatment, deputies said.
Mina said another deputy also witnessed the shooting.
Mina said the body camera footage is dark because the area was not well lit.
