ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. — The Florida Highway Patrol is investigating a deadly hit-and-run crash involving a pedestrian and three vehicles in Orange County.
The crash happened around 6 a.m. Monday on South Apopka Vineland Road near Palm Parkway. The road was closed for more than three hours as troopers investigated the crash.
According to FHP, a Nissan Altima was traveling southbound on South Apopka Vineland Road when it struck a pedestrian in the road.
Video from the scene showed damage to the Altima’s windshield and the bottom of its bumper.
Troopers said the victim, a 76-year-old man, fell into the outside lane, where a second vehicle, a Nissan Cube, struck him.
According to the crash report, the driver of the first vehicle said a third vehicle, described as a white SUV, also struck the victim while traveling in the outside lane.
FHP said both the second and third vehicles initially continued driving, but the driver of the second vehicle later returned to the scene.
The pedestrian was taken to Dr. Phillips Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
The victim’s name has not been released.
According to the Florida Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles crash dashboard, 18 pedestrians have been killed so far this year. The dashboard also reports 3,800 hit-and-run crashes and 5 fatalities from them.
The crash remains under investigation.
Troopers are asking anyone with information about the third vehicle to contact the Florida Highway Patrol or Crimeline.
