The victim’s mother watched the hearing from Australia and said she was outraged and disappointed.

“My son is in a box,” Nehed Arabi said. “My son can’t move anymore. I can’t see him anymore.”

Ruiz offered a brief apology to the victim’s family.

“I just want to say that I am truly and sincerely sorry,” he said.

Under the plea term, Ruiz will have his license suspended for three years and be on probation for the next five years.
