ORLANDO, Fla. — An Orange County judge found convicted cop killer Markeith Loyd competent on Thursday to proceed with sentencing.
Earlier this week, a doctor hired by the defense said Loyd understands facts but is not rational.
A doctor hired by prosecutors said Loyd understands the seriousness of the case.
Loyd was found guilty of murdering Orlando police Lt. Debra Clayton in November.
Clayton was shot and killed by Loyd more than five years ago.
The judge ruled Loyd can be sentenced next Thursday, March 3.
Loyd’s lawyer asked the judge to spare his life, pushing for life without parole instead.
A jury has recommended death.
Channel 9 will continue to follow the sentencing of Loyd and provide live coverage on Eyewitness News.
