‘She’s one of the finest’: First Baptist Church of Orlando honors 85-year-old home invasion victim

ORLANDO, Fla. — 85-year-old Lucy Pat Curl spent more than 50 years serving her community at the First Baptist Church of Orlando, Pastor David Uth said during Sunday service. “You look up and think - God, she’s one of the best. She’s one of the finest,” Uth said.

Church members are now honoring the woman after a tragic incident that left her in critical condition.

On Friday, Curl was alone at home when someone knocked on her door. “Bill [Curl’s husband] was doing counseling with someone at the pregnancy center,” said Pastor Uth. “She went to the door and asked the man to identify himself, and he said he was a community services officer.”

The man, however, was 55-year-old Ronald Davis and not a community services officer, according to the Orlando Police Department. Davis allegedly broke into Curl’s home, knocked her down, and took off. “She hit a coffee table and destroyed part of her head,” Uth said.

Davis is now facing a slew of charges, including home invasion, robbery with a weapon, and aggravated battery on a person over 65. The suspect has a lengthy criminal record and has been sentenced to 15 years behind bars for a similar case.

According to OPD, the victim’s husband found her severely hurt in their garage, honking for help. Curl was rushed to the hospital with a severe head injury.

She remains in the hospital in critical condition. “They ran a second scan, and it was beyond health and the neurosurgeon said there’s really nothing we can do,” said Uth. “Everything that they’ve heard is that she’s not going to make it.”

Davis remains at the Orange County Jail, where he’s being held without bond.
