Orlando charter school breaks ground on new, state-of-the-art campus

ORLANDO, Fla. — One of Central Florida’s oldest charter schools will soon have a permanent home.

Legends Academy broke ground Wednesday on a brand new campus in Washington Shores that will provide local kids with a better education experience.

Currently, students at Legends Academy are taught in portable learning spaces.

The new campus will provide a state-of-the-art learning opportunity for more kids in the Washington Shores area.

Legends Academy has served Central Florida students for decades, working to close the academic gap in lower income areas.

“What makes us unique in this community is that we are the only public school of choice in the neighborhood,” Legends Academy Executive Director Dr. Jennifer Porter-Smith said.

The new facility they broke ground on Wednesday will be a STEM-focused K through 8 campus that Legends Academy officials say their students deserve.

“Now we have something permanent, something we can call home,” Porter-Smith said. “Just providing a better educational experience for children who really deserve high-quality education.

Porter-Smith says the school currently serves 350 students. The new campus will allow them the capacity to serve more than 560 children.

“We’re going to scale up over a period of three to five years,” Porter-Smith said.

The general contractor for the project says she plans to start construction before the fall.
