ORLANDO, Fla. — The Orlando City Commission voted Tuesday to give themselves a 6.5 percent raise, bumping their yearly pay from about $54,500 to $58,000.
While many didn’t object to the raises, some questioned how they were passed.
The commission raise was tucked into a consent agenda that also gave raises to more than 1,300 city employees which concerned Orlando resident Doug Head.
“There is objection to the process of not knowing, or burying them with other matters,” he said. “Seems to me the City Council would want the public to know in a very open way when they get little raises.”
The package of raises for city employees was on the agenda for a meeting a week before, but no one came to voice concern, Commissioner Tony Oritz said.
“At the end of the day, people can also comment, but nobody came and discussed that,” he said.
Oritz and Commissioner Robert Stuart voted against raises for commissioners, but voted for the other raises for city employees.
Mayor Buddy Dyer received a 5 percent raise, taking his yearly salary from $177,435 to $186,306.
