ORLANDO, Fla. — The Orlando Museum of Art is rolling out three new exhibitions this fall, with openings beginning Sept. 11 and continuing through late September.
The lineup includes original children’s book illustrations, more than 130 pieces of vintage Florida material culture and 70 photographs documenting the state’s wildlife and landscapes.
‘Hello Sophie: The Picture Book Art of Sophie Blackall’
The first exhibition opens Sept. 11 and features original artwork by Sophie Blackall, the illustrator behind more than 50 children’s books, including the “Ivy and Bean” series.
Blackall won the Randolph Caldecott Medal for “Finding Winnie” in 2016 and “Hello Lighthouse” in 2019.
She is scheduled to visit the museum Oct. 3 for a presentation, question-and-answer session, book signing and meet-and-greet.
The exhibition runs through Jan. 3.
‘Floridiana’ explores Florida’s tourism past
“Floridiana: Material Culture from The Sunshine State” opens Sept. 17 and examines how tourists experienced Florida during the mid-20th century.
The exhibition includes more than 130 objects from the collection of photographer, author and educator Gary Monroe.
Items include hotel ashtrays, rubber alligators, roadside attraction brochures and other souvenirs reflecting Florida’s tourism culture.
The exhibition opens during OMA’s monthly Access for All free-admission day and runs through Feb. 1.
Florida Wildlife Corridor featured in photography exhibition
“The Wild Path: Connecting the Florida We Don’t See, Photographs by Carlton Ward Jr.” opens Sept. 25.
The exhibition features 70 photographs by National Geographic Explorer and Emmy Award-winning filmmaker Carlton Ward Jr., who founded the Florida Wildlife Corridor project in 2010.
Ward has traveled about 2,000 miles on foot during expeditions focused on protecting the corridor and supporting Florida panther conservation. His work also helped lead to the documentary “Path of the Panther.”
An opening celebration is scheduled for the evening of Sept. 24, with Ward expected to attend.
The exhibition runs through Jan. 3.
The museum will also offer gallery talks, docent-led tours and other programming connected to the exhibitions throughout the fall.
