Police: Man in Oakland drove drunk with child in car

OAKLAND, Fla. — Oakland police arrested a man they said was driving drunk with his child in the car.

Police said they saw Richard Davis, 29, of Kissimmee, sitting in his Honda truck at The Kangaroo Express gas station on West Colonial Drive.

His truck was parked at a gas pump.

The car was running and Davis was passed out at the wheel, according to police reports.

The officer on the scene saw empty beer cans in the vehicle and a 5-year-old boy sleeping in the back seat.

When the officer knocked on the truck’s window, Davis got out of the truck and had a difficult time steadying himself.

Police said he was confused, disoriented and smelled of alcohol.

They said he could barely stand on his feet as they tried to speak to him.

Officers conducted a field sobriety test and Davis was later arrested.

Police said his blood-alcohol level was nearly three times the legal limit.

A glass pipe with marijuana inside was found inside the truck.

Davis was charged with child neglect, possession of cannabis and DUI while accompanied by a minor.

Channel 9 learned Davis served in the United States Marines overseas.

Officials with the Department of Children and Families said the boy is staying with family and is not in protective custody.

The agency will continue to investigate before it determines a long-term living arrangement.

Davis bonded out of jail Saturday.
