TITUSVILLE, Fla.,None — A veteran Titusville firefighter is in jail on no bond after he was arrested for allegedly trying to kill his superior.
Randy Moore, a firefighter with the department, was booked into the Brevard County Jail Tuesday afternoon after a police investigation. (read the charging affidavit)
He's charged with poisoning the drinking canteen of a fellow firefighter, according to Titusville police.
Police said Lt. Phil Jones, of the Titusville Fire Department, discovered a substance that smelled like solvent in his water canteen on Thursday.
Detectives determined that the canteen contained “gunk,” a cleaning substance that, according to the police report, is clearly labeled as harmful or fatal if swallowed. "Gunk" is mainly used by mechanics to clean engines.
Even if Jones did not drink it, the highly flammable liquid could have burst into flames during a fire, burning Jones.
According to the police report, Moore had engaged in a number of acts “targeting the victim Lt. Phil Jones,” over several weeks, including writing derogatory statements about Jones, putting spices in his coffee, tampering with files and other acts meant to embarrass Jones.
The police report said that Moore confessed to the incidents he committed with a fellow firefighter. The report also says he was aware of the potential consequences of his actions, but that he said “he did not want to kill the victim he was just upset with him.”
Jones is a 28 year veteran with the department and Moore has worked as a firefighter for 12 years.
No one from Titusville's Fire Station 10 would answer questions from WFTV, but the police report states that Moore's pranks started around six months ago.
Moore is in jail without bond and suspended with pay until the fire department can finish its own investigation. He will make an appearance before a judge Wednesday afternoon.
Moore has also been charged with aggravating stalking in the case.
Another firefighter who allegedly watched Moore commit the crime may be charged as well.
