Polk County doctor arrested on charges of trading hydrocodone for meth

POLK COUNTY, Fla. — A Polk County doctor was arrested after investigators said he wrote prescriptions for hydrocodone in exchange for methamphetamine.

Investigators said Gregory Gooden, a licensed doctor who practiced in Winter Haven, wrote five prescriptions to Dennis Holt between February and June.

A check of the Florida Prescription and Drug Monitoring Database confirmed the prescriptions, officials said.

According to a report, Gooden did not conduct a medical history before writing the prescriptions.

The prescriptions were for 60 to 90 pills.

Through their investigation, detectives discovered another patient for whom Gooden prescribed the narcotic.

Earlier this month, Gooden reported his car stolen and said Michelle Gilbertson was the suspect. She was arrested on theft charges,  and told detectives she and Gooden met through mutual friends and he would write her prescriptions for hydrocodone.

Gilbertson told deputies she and Gooden would smoke weed and drink at his home.

A review of the prescription pill database showed Gooden allegedly wrote prescriptions for at least 90 hydrocodone pills for Gilbertson.

"This guy must have been high when he decided to write prescriptions, from his home, in exchange for meth. He also smoked marijuana with one of his patients, whom he later had  arrested for stealing his car. You just can't make this stuff up, " said Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd.

Detectives said they obtained an arrest warrant and arrested Gooden at his Winter Haven home.
