Processing error has some Brighthouse customers getting over charged

ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. — Bright House customers may want to take a closer look at their bank statement.

3,000 people were mistakenly overcharged and Bright House is still working to refund the money.

The glitch only affected customers who wrote checks to pay their bill, but some were charged double, even triple their monthly amount.

Bright House customer Edwin Wehmeyer said, "That's when I spotted they had Bright house debit me 4 times with the same check number which was really strange."

Officials told Eyewitness News a payment processing error led to duplicate payment withdrawals.

"I'm shocked. My money disappeared and I have no control over getting it back; how or when," Sandy Landres said.

"They said in 24-48 hours it will be straightened out. So I waited to Wednesday, nothing changed. I can afford a boo-boo like this, but there's some people that really couldn't," said Wehmeyer.

A spokesperson told Eyewitness News the company is working with a third party payment processing vendor to resolve the error.

The spokesperson also said Bright House will reimburse customers for the multiple charges as well as any bank fees that may have been caused by the mistake.
