ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. — A jailhouse relationship between an inmate and an Orange County corrections officer that turned into a potential escape plot could cost the corrections officer her career.
Channel 9 first reported about Susie Logan’s forbidden relationship with inmate Joshua James when she suddenly resigned last year.
A newly released 13-page internal affairs report shows how Logan carried on the relationship with James for months.
He’s in jail on aggravated child abuse and first-degree murder charges.
The report shows Logan used other inmates to pass letters to James, detailing how she loved him.
Sometimes, the notes were placed in toilet paper rolls or dropped off during security checks, according to the report.
James and two other inmates, Gregory Anderson and Desmond Kenner, were allegedly planning to escape and take an officer hostage.
Anderson and Kenner are in jail on murder charges.
According to the report, the inmates allegedly discussed how they could get Logan to provide maps to help with the escape that never happened.
“This takes it to a whole new level and this is exactly why there are policies against things like this,” said law enforcement expert Mark Lang.
Logan turned in her resignation letter in October when the investigation began.
Before that, she again used an inmate to slip a Trac cellphone under James’ pillow.
Investigators said he called Logan 158 times in one month.
She sent more love letters to Logan after she quit.
Most are in code, but she made a promise to James that said, “When investigation over. I’ll come see you.”
The Orange County Jail Chief said in a statement, “The Department currently has a strong existing police in place against the fraternization of staff members and inmates. The department will continue to enforce that policy."
It goes on to say Logan quit before she could be fired.
The Florida Department of Law Enforcement will decide if her law certification should be revoked, which would keep her from ever working in law enforcement again.
