ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. — Work to slow down the traffic on a busy Orange County intersection isn’t working, residents said.
Crews are narrowing the road at Aloma Avenue and Semoran Boulevard in Winter Park.
Residents said the road work is making things more dangerous for drivers.
Homeowners in the Georgetown Estates community said they have a number of concerns. They can no longer make a left turn out of their neighborhood because transportation officials added a median.
Glenn Finch said it’s a hassle to get out of his neighborhood.
More than 44,000 cars drive on Aloma Avenue every day near Winter Park Forest and Georgetown Estates.
“It's no longer a convenient place to live in Orange County,” said Finch.
The Florida Department of Transportation recently started construction near his neighborhood. Crews ripped up two right-turn lanes to make the roads more pedestrian-friendly.
Crews also added a median, which stopped some area residents from making a left turn out of their neighborhood near Aloma Avenue and Coachlight Way.
Now they must catch the nearest traffic light to head east.
Finch said he’s seen drivers make illegal U-turns outside his subdivision.
“It’s not just on occasion they’re driving over the medians. They’re doing three-point turns to make the U-turn in heavy traffic,” Finch said.
Construction is expected to be complete by spring 2016.
