SEMINOLE COUNTY, Fla. — In the wake of seven non-credible threats of violence this school year, Seminole County Schools and the Seminole County Sheriff's Office met with concerned parents Thursday to talk about school security.
Two of the threats happened in February.
Parent Marjorie Guilbeau was appreciative of the district and sheriff's office for making the effort to inform parents about security at schools in the county.
She also walked away reassured that students are being well cared for.
"It is nice to see that," she said. "Oh wow, there is a whole team of people concerned about the safety of our schools."
The town hall meeting comes after a tweet was posted on a fake school district Twitter account on Feb. 10 saying classes were canceled due to threats of student violence.
Days later, a message was found etched in a mirror in a Lake Mary High School bathroom, warning of a school shooting.
Eighty-five percent of students stayed home the day after it was discovered.
Parents were told during Thursday's meeting that school resource officers are always checking gates and doors, and that the sheriff's office is planning to add an officer at high schools in the county.
"We know there's a lot of people working behind the scenes," parent David Schwab said. "Even though we know that, it's impressive to see how much they do."
The Seminole County Sheriff's Office also said next year plans are in place for faculty and staff at every school to be equipped with a cellphone app that will be able to immediately inform law enforcement during incidents like active shooters.
