Seminole County teacher turns events in DC into “teachable moment”

SEMINOLE COUNTY, Fla. — The chaos at the U.S. Capitol on Wednesday was the topic of discussion in many government classes across central Florida on Thursday.

Seminole High School government teacher Adam Carpenter said he never imagined that he would discuss anything like the scene that played out in our nation’s Capitol on Wednesday.

“I didn’t really grasp it until I went home and turned on the news and I thought, ‘My God,’” Carpenter said.

After speaking with other teachers, he decided to have a discussion with his students.

“The students had a lot of opinions about what happened, how it all went down and why,” he said.

Many students in his class come from diverse backgrounds, and much of the conversation centered around the difference between what they saw Wednesday and the Black Lives Matter demonstrations that played out this past summer.

Carpenter says, while his students had a lot of good things to say, he doesn’t plan on making what happened in Washington, D.C., the focus of his class but is open to the idea of revisiting the discussion in the future.
