Several charged in Ocala Walmart theft scheme

OCALA, Fla. — Investigators said they've arrested two couples accused of stealing from Walmart several times over the past few weeks.

Two of the four suspects were arrested Tuesday night after a Walmart employee at the Ocala store near Highway 200 noticed two men pushing carts full of tires out of the store and into a waiting Budget rental truck.

Surveillance video showed it was the suspects’ second trip to the store that day, and both times they took tires.

The suspects picked a time of night when there wasn't a whole lot of activity and deputies said they worked together to haul off thousands of dollars in tires and other merchandise.

“You can see her come through the store with her child,” said Detective Greg Spicher. “She goes and unlocks the door.”

Deputies were able to track down the suspects, along with $6,400 in stolen tires.

“All the suspects are unemployed,” said Spicher. “And as one of them said, ‘If I get to that point, I'll do what I have to do  to support my family.’”

Deputies said they found more than a dozen tires at the home of Andrew and Chantelle Weinrich. Detectives also located two dozen more tires inside Ameh Ruiz' hotel room.

Those three, along with the woman who rented the Budget truck, Julia Drinkwater, face grand theft charges.

Ocala police said they also linked two of the suspects to an attempted theft at a Walmart in their jurisdiction.
