Some cold weather shelters reach capacity as front brings freezing temps to Central Florida

ORLANDO, Fla. — Many Central Florida shelters are running at capacity due to the cold weather this weekend.

Some are extending capacity by at least 100 people, utilizing every possible space to keep the area’s homeless population warm.

Lynx bus service is also helping those without homes on the chilly nights.

Anyone experiencing homelessness can get on any Lynx bus and ask to be taken to a nearby shelter for free.

As Central Florida residents prepare for freezing temperatures this weekend, Orange County leaders have been working with the Homeless Services Network to offer shelter for residents, homeless individuals and people without stable housing.

There are also weather warming centers around Central Florida as well.

According to the Homeless Services Network, over the last 12 months, nearly 5,000 individuals were homeless in Central Florida.
