LAKE COUNTY, Fla. — A state lawmaker is calling on education officials to throw out Common Core testing after he had trouble helping his granddaughter with her Common Core homework.
Senator Alan Hays, who represents Orange, Lake, Marion and Sumter counties, spoke out at a Lake County school board meeting Monday night.
"I would just flat out refuse and say, 'I'm not going to do it and Lake County is not going to do it either,' deal with it Tallahassee," said Hays. "I'm that fed up with it."
Hays told school board members that he realized how bad the Common Core standards were while helping his granddaughter with a homework assignment.
"I jumped at the chance, as any self-respecting grandparent would, but oh my goodness was I in for a shocking experience," said Hays.
Hays admitted that he actually voted to make the standards part of school curriculum, but said he and other lawmakers should have done more research before voting.
"I am all for challenging our students. I'm all for high academic standards," said Hays. "But we made a very serious mistake."
Hays said he plans to continue to do everything he can during the next legislative session to get Common Core thrown out.
