Student arrested after bringing weapon to Orange County high school, school officials say

WINTER GARDEN, Fla. — A student at West Orange High School was arrested after he brought a weapon to campus, school officials said.

Deputies said they were called to the high school just before noon after school officials were notified a student may have a weapon on campus.

Officials said the student was located and searched. They found a weapon in the student’s backpack.

School officials said the weapon was never displayed in a threatening manner.

The high school was placed on lock down while law enforcement searched for the student, officials said.

The student was charged with possession of a firearm and resisting officers without violence.

“We strongly encourage you to speak with your son or daughter about making good choices, and to regularly check your students backpack for items that are not allowed at campus,” said Melissa Gordon, the principal of West Orange High School.
