ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. — It might be a very frustrating few weeks inside auto tag and title offices in Orange County, where some drivers have serious concerns about their tag renewal.
Channel 9 learned thousands of misprinted renewal notices were sent by tax collector Scott Randolph’s office.
Orange County driver Chuny Pritchett’s renewal came with incorrect pricing and VIN numbers. She’s not alone.
“Nothing was matching up, dates, VIN numbers. Nothing matched,” said Terry Powell.
Powell got a misprinted tag as well, and it was mailed three days ago--not nearly enough time to clear up confusion before his tags expire.
The mistakes include fee amounts that differ from the statement to the payment stub, incorrect VIN numbers and two-year renewals that are cheaper than one year renewals.
The Tax Collector’s Office admits it’s a big mistake, but blames a new vendor that sent out the notices.
Whatever happened, drivers like Powell worry about blue lights in her rear view mirror.
The notice had no misprint about what might happen after midnight Friday; drivers could face a $400 fine if it expires.
In a statement from the Tax Collector’s Office, they suggest the best thing to do is go to the state’s website to renew.
Officials at the office did not say if they plan had a plan in place to keep drivers from being fined.
