ORLANDO, Fla. — University of Florida officials told students and the public to stay away from Millican Hall and the campus library because of police activity.
The University of Central Florida tweeted Friday: “Out of an abundance of caution, please stay clear of Millican Hall and Library area due to police activity.”
Skywitness 9 was over the scene on Andromeda Loop North.
UCF said that at about 10:45 a.m., university police received a call from an Uber driver about a man “holding what appeared to be a long gun” near Millican Hall.
UCF police then tweeted that they “immediately responded to scene and made contact with caller out of an abundance of caution. Appears to be no active threat.”
Students said they were immediately notified about the incident.
"(It was) text and email. At first, they let us know there was suspicious activity, and we got another one saying that they believed it was a man with a rifle, so pretty scary day," said UCF sophomore Jake Hood.
The scene was cleared just before noon.
"Back in spring, a similar situation happened. They did take all the students out of the library. So I was wondering if something like that would happen this time," said UCF junior Joe Klawe-Genao.
UCF's police chief said the potential threat immediately brought the Pulse mass shooting to mind.
"Pulse has changed everybody across this country every law enforcement agency's response to these types of calls," said Richard Beary.
