Universal to donate land to Orange County for affordable housing

ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. — Universal Orlando announced on Monday it plans to donate a chunk of land to help about a thousand families live more affordably.

The land is located just south of the new theme park, Epic Universe.

“Universal has always tried to be aware and sensitive to the needs of the community and we’ve tried to respond to that in a different number of ways,” said Universal Orlando CEO John Sproles.

The announcement comes right before a controversial vote, which could give Universal Orlando $125 million in county tax dollars to build an extension to Kirkman Road for Universal’s new theme park, Epic Universe.

Universal said it wants to donate 20 acres of land for housing and also assist with three mass transit options.

The land for affordable housing would go just south of Epic Universe.

The county plans to build a high-rise apartment with about 1,000 units on the donated land.
