MELBOURNE, Fla. — A precautionary boil water notice is in effect for all City of Melbourne and City of West Melbourne water customers on Tuesday following a water main break in the distribution network.
Utility crews are working to identify the location of the break and restore full service.
The advisory covers all water intended for drinking, cooking, making ice, brushing teeth or washing dishes.
City officials advise residents to bring tap water to a rolling boil for one minute before consumption or to rely on bottled water as an alternative.
Water pressure has begun improving in areas north of U.S. 192 and in beachside communities, though low or no water pressure persists in other sections of the system.
In an official statement, the City of Melbourne outlined the status of the network: “Water pressure is improving in many parts of our water distribution network except for customers located south of US 192 between Dairy Road and US 1 who are currently with little to no water service.”
City officials also requested public assistance during the repairs, stating, “We ask all customers to please conserve water as much as possible.”
Utility crews are searching for the main line damage to complete repairs. The City of Melbourne stated, “A water main break has occurred, but its exact location is unknown at this time.”
Officials added that “crews are still working to resolve water system issues” while monitoring pressure levels across affected service zones.
The City of Melbourne utility network provides water directly or wholesales to multiple municipalities in Brevard County.
Affected areas include Melbourne, West Melbourne, Indialantic, Indian Harbour Beach, Melbourne Beach, Melbourne Village, Palm Shores and Satellite Beach, as well as unincorporated Brevard County areas located south of the Pineda Causeway.
The city noted that residents in Suntree and Viera receive water from the Cocoa water system and are not impacted by this notice.
The precautionary boil water notice will remain in effect until repairs are finished and official testing verifies that the water is safe for consumption.
The City of Melbourne stated that another notification will be distributed to residents once testing confirms the water safety and the notice is officially lifted.
