WATCH: Video shows Wildwood police officer put gun to suspect’s head

WILDWOOD, Fla. — A Wildwood police officer is under investigation after a video shows him putting his gun to a suspect’s head.

The Wildwood Police Department launched an investigation after learning about several issues with the officer.

The body camera video shows the end of a wild police chase that started in Wildwood and ended in Marion County.

Along the way, the suspect’s car was smashed and one officer’s patrol car caught on fire.

Police said it began when Travis Jerrod Mosley pulled a gun out during an argument and threatened to kill someone in May of 2019.

Police tracked Mosley down, and investigators said he led officers on a chase with speeds reaching up to 100 mph.

Eventually, Mosley hopped out of his car and ran away.

Former Wildwood Detective Chris Smalt was behind Mosley, and investigators said during the incident, Smalt fired a warning shot.

Eventually, Marion County deputies confronted Mosley, forced him to get on the ground and yelled for him to put his hands behind his back.

That’s when Smalt could be seen jumping on Mosley’s back and putting a gun to Mosley’s head.

Later, Smalt is heard on camera talking about the warning shot.

“He was armed, supposedly, so I just put one in the ground when I was close to him so he understood the situation. He stopped immediately. I just didn’t want to tackle someone who might be armed,” Smalt said.

Firing a warning shot is a violation of Wildwood police policy.

Smalt was suspended for three days.

After the fact, investigators found out about Smalt putting his gun to Mosley’s head.

Once investigators got the video showing Smalt putting the gun to Mosley’s head, they sent the case to the state attorney’s office to review.

No charges were filed. The Police Department then asked the Florida Department of Law Enforcement to look into it.

Channel 9 learned Smalt retired shortly after the warning shot investigation was finished.
