LAKE MARY, Fla. — Two men are accused of turning a Facebook Marketplace motorcycle sale into an armed robbery after deputies said the seller realized an apparent electronic payment had not gone through.
Joshua Shaw and Jonathan Amao-Webb were arrested by the Seminole County Sheriff’s Office on charges including robbery with a firearm, aggravated battery with a deadly weapon and grand theft, according to an arrest report.
Investigators said the victim had listed a 2008 Suzuki GSX-R 1000 motorcycle for sale on Facebook Marketplace. Shaw allegedly contacted him about buying it, and the two eventually agreed on a price of about $8,700.
The seller initially met Shaw and Amao-Webb at a Publix shopping plaza on Lake Mary Boulevard. After Shaw asked to test drive the motorcycle, the seller refused to hand over the bike until he had been paid, according to deputies. The group then went to the seller’s residence to finish the transaction.
Deputies: Seller became suspicious of payment
While paperwork was being completed, the seller received what appeared to be a Zelle payment notification.
Deputies said he became suspicious because the notification did not resemble previous Zelle transactions. When he checked his bank account, the money was not there. Shaw allegedly continued asking for the motorcycle key and trying to handle the title despite the seller telling him to stop until payment could be confirmed.
Investigators said Amao-Webb then approached the seller from behind and struck him in the head.
The blow knocked the seller to the ground and caused him to briefly lose awareness, according to the report. When he began getting up, deputies said he saw a black handgun in Amao-Webb’s hand.
While the seller was on the ground, Shaw allegedly grabbed vehicle keys from the tailgate area. The victim later reported that about $3,000 in cash was also missing from his wallet, along with keys and remotes for several vehicles.
Deputies locate suspects in minivan
Deputies said Shaw and Amao-Webb fled together in a silver minivan.
Seminole County deputies, along with Lake Mary and Longwood police officers, later located a silver Toyota minivan near Ronald Reagan Boulevard and Longwood Hills Road. Investigators said the vehicle and its occupants matched descriptions provided after the robbery.
Shaw and Amao-Webb were detained and later taken to the John E. Polk Correctional Facility, according to the arrest report.
