Volunteer at after-school program accused of sexually assaulting boy

ORANGE COUNTY, Fla.,None — Orange County deputies said a volunteer at an after-school program is accused of sexually assaulting a child, and he may have more victims.

Charles Hayes III, 18, was arrested and even admitted to deputies that he assaulted the young boy, and he confessed to sexually assaulting young boys before, officials said.

Deputies said Hayes volunteered at a Pine Hills neighborhood after-school program at least twice a week.

According to the arrest affidavit, last Monday Hayes spotted the boy outside the apartments where the program was held.

First Hayes helped him buy candy from a vending machine. Then he carried him to a third floor stairwell where he sexually assaulted him, according to the affidavit.

Deputies said the child told his mother, who then called authorities.

The victim's mother spoke to WFTV on Monday night.

"My son trusted that man," the victim's mother said.

She said Hayes raped her 7-year-old son.

"It's like taking them to a day care. You're putting your child’s trust in somebody else, and when something like that happens, that's the scariest thing,” said neighbor Aubrey Law.

The property manager wouldn't answer questions about what happened, how Hayes got his job there, or what they're doing now.

The boy’s mother said that has her outraged.

"They need to be shut down and not have no after school program anymore because it might happen to somebody else,” she said.

WFTV found out this is the first time Hayes has been arrested in Orange County.

Investigators didn't want to identify the apartment complex to protect the child.
