Volusia council agrees to allow dogs on beaches

VOLUSIA COUNTY, Fla. — It is news dog owners have been waiting for. Dogs will be allowed on most Volusia County beaches -- with restrictions.

The Volusia County Council agreed Thursday to at least temporarily allow dogs on the beach after 4 p.m. and before 9 a.m., and only on leashes.

The Daytona Beach News-Journal reports Councilman Josh Wagner pitched the idea as a pilot program that would extend for three months. Afterward, the council could either extend it or end the program.

Wagner says any violation of the leash law would be met with a citation.

The council will consider an ordinance in February.
