VOLUSIA COUNTY, Fla. — Volusia County's beach patrol officers have been working out of a rat-infested, leaky building for years but the county is stepping up to fix the problem.
The lifeguard station in Ormond Beach will be demolished and rebuilt, costing roughly $300,000.
When WFTV took a look at the building, there were cracks, leaks and rust throughout, as well as several signs of a rat infestation.
“Stuff like that is not good to have around,” said Tammy Marris of the Beach Patrol. “It's not safe. But, it's just something we've tried to keep under control for the last few years."
Other changes will include a new lifeguard station in New Smyrna Beach near Flagler Avenue and a renovated park in Wilbur by the sea.
The county will also add brand new bathrooms along the beaches, as soon as they are approved.
