Volusia County school employee who slammed teacher to ground resigns

VOLUSIA COUNTY, Fla. — In a "friendly" basketball game that got out of control a Volusia County school adviser slammed a woman to the ground, injuring her, according to police.

Investigators said the Holly Hill teacher has bruises and a broken rib from the Wednesday incident.

Surveillance video from the school where the game was being played shows Travis Mims, 27, slamming his fellow employee to the ground. The footage has been seen by parents all over central Florida.

"He could have killed her; he really could have, or hurt her worse than she already is hurt. That's ridiculous," parent Ashley Hall said.

The injured teacher, Katherine Martin, 33, told Channel 9's Blaine Tolison that she was friends with Mims, and even teaches with his fiancée.

According to police, Martin and Mims had played basketball together dozens of times.

The video shows Mims arguing with the Martin, a special education teacher. It appears Martin tried to walk away.

Police said the two were exchanging words over fouls before the 6-foot-2-inch, 260-pound Mims threw Martin to the floor.

"You don't even see that in professional sports, so that's where we drew the line," Holly Hill Police Chief Steven Aldrich said.

In the video Martin is seen squirming in pain. She said she later found out she broke a rib and now has a bulged disk in her neck.

On Thursday Mims signed paperwork, voluntarily resigning his position at the school.

"I'm happy to hear that. I mean, there's no excuse it happening, especially at a school (with) these little kids here," parent Robert Nicholas said.

Volusia County School District officials said Mims started with the school district in August and has not been disciplined in the time he has worked for them.

Records show he has been arrested three times in Volusia County since 2008, but in all three instances the charges were dropped.

Mims has been charged with aggravated battery with bodily harm and disability in Wednesday's incident.
