4-year-old girl among 3 killed, 7 others hurt after van overturns on I-95 near Ormond Beach

VOLUSIA COUNTY, Fla. — Florida Highway Patrol troopers are investigating a deadly crash that happened in Volusia County around 5:30 a.m. on Sunday.

The crash involved a 2000 Ford van that drifted off the roadway and overturned on northbound I-95 at mile marker 277 near Ormond Beach, troopers said.

According to troopers, the roof was ripped open from the impact and the occupants were ejected.

Volusia County Fire Department confirmed there were 10 people in the van when it overturned. Troopers said the van passengers are residents from Maryland that were visiting Florida.

A 19-year-old female, a 4-year-old female and a 37-year-old man, that was located underneath the van, were pronounced deceased on the scene, troopers said.

Four of the passengers were transported to Halifax Medial Center in stable condition. Three of the occupants were transported to Florida Advent Health in critical condition.

Another child, who troopers said is 4 or 5 years old, was taken to the Arnold Palmer Hospital with minor injuries.

Troopers said they believe some of the people involved in the crash were laying down and sleeping in the back of the van.

They also said there were no car seats found at the crash scene.

According to troopers, a puppy was also rescued in the crash and has been returned to its owner.

Troopers said the crash remains under investigation.
