Driver killed after dogs escape van on I-95, troopers say

VOLSUSIA COUNTY, Fla. — The Florida Highway Patrol is investigating a deadly crash after a driver chased dogs onto the highway.

The crash happened Saturday morning on southbound Interstate 95 near the West Indian River Boulevard exit.

Troopers said a van pulled over near mile marker 243 so the driver and passenger could switch positions, as the driver was fatigued.

When the driver exited the van, two dogs got out of the van and ran into the southbound lanes.

The driver chased the dogs and was hit by a car traveling on the interstate.

The 40-year-old woman was pronounced dead at the scene.

According to troopers, the dogs were caught and were returned to the van uninjured.

Southbound lanes of I-95 are currently shut down.
