87-year-old man killed after train strikes vehicle in Volusia County, FHP says

VOLUSIA COUNTY, Fla. — Loved ones are mourning the death of an 87-year-old man who died when his truck collided with a freight train.

Florida Highway Patrol troopers said the crash happened around 1:15 a.m. in the area of West Beresford Road and Alexander Drive.

Investigators say the driver of a red pickup truck, later identified as Billy Davis, made a left turn onto railroad tracks at the intersection and starting heading southbound on the tracks, toward a northbound CSX freight train with two conductors aboard.

Investigators said the conductors did everything possible to stop, but it was too late. The impact carried the pickup about 500 feet, according to investigators.

Davis, a DeLand resident, died at the scene of the crash. There were no other injuries.
