2 officers shoot man who ran toward them with sharp object at Daytona Beach apartment complex

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. — A 25-year-old man is in critical condition after he was shot by Daytona Beach police officers while they investigated a domestic disturbance, police said.

The shooting happened just before 10 p.m. Thursday at the Icon One Apartments at One Daytona.

As officers were on the way to the scene, one 911 caller told dispatchers that two men were arguing in a parking lot off Legends Lane and that one of the men said he was going to “stab someone” if he saw a police officer.

When officers arrived at the scene, they said they found Andrew Mansilla holding a sharp object. Investigators did not specify what that object was.

Body camera video of the incident shows Mansilla charge at one of the officers with the sharp object in his hand despite warnings to stop moving toward the officers.

Police said they tried to Taser Mansilla, but they were unsuccessful. Two officers then shot Mansilla.

Mansilla was taken to a hospital, where he remains in critical condition.

“Obviously, something’s not right with this guy,” Daytona Beach police Chief Jakari Young said. “Like I said, we have a history with him. We may never know what caused him to act the way he did this evening.”

The officers have been placed on paid administrative leave while the Florida Department of Law Enforcement investigates the shooting, a standard procedure for shootings involving police officers.
