Volusia County chairman pushes for buildings to be inspected every 10 years

VOLUSIA COUNTY, Fla. — While the exact cause of the Surfside condo collapse where more than 20 people have died and more than 100 people are unaccounted for a letter sent months before the collapse warned of damage getting worse after a 2018 report brought up concerns.

Only two counties in the state, Broward and Dade, require re-inspections of buildings. But Volusia County chairman Jeff Brower said he wants to change that here, and is asking for the governor’s help to get multi-story buildings along the coast inspected at least every 10 years.

Brower said he’s heard from people concerned about at least two buildings within Daytona Beach. However, the county said it does not have any jurisdiction permitting or inspecting with individual cities.

The county said the Florida Building Commission could decide to make the Broward and Dade reinspection requirements statewide.
