These Walmart, Publix & Winn-Dixie locations will begin administering COVID-19 vaccines this week: How to sign up

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Gov. Ron DeSantis said more than 100 Walmart locations, 600 Publix stores and 40 Winn-Dixie locations in Florida will begin administering the COVID-19 vaccine to people age 65 and older this week.

He announced the news in an event at a Walmart location in Jacksonville on Tuesday.

Walmart

DeSantis said 119 Walmart stores in 34 counties will begin giving the vaccine on Friday. He said that covers 30% of the superstore’s footprint in the state including both Walmart and Sam’s Club locations

He said the chain will be allocated 25,000 vaccine doses to begin with.

Vaccination appointments can be made at participating Walmart stores by clicking here and participating Sam’s Club stores by clicking here. DeSantis said seniors will not have to be members of Sam’s Club to receive the vaccine at its locations.

Publix

DeSantis said that Publix pharmacies are also expanding its distribution of the vaccine. He said the grocery store chain will be upping its vaccine distribution from 325 locations to 600 locations.

That expansion includes locations in Lake, Orange, Osceola, Polk, Seminole and Sumter counties. The chain was already vaccinating people at locations in Brevard, Flagler, Marion and Volusia counties.

People over the age of 65 are able to start making appointments on Wednesday after 7 a.m. for appointments beginning on Friday.

The rollout is part of a White House plan to make the COVID-19 vaccine more widely available and help people who live in communities without easy access to hospitals or convention centers.

Publix was the first retail pharmacy to begin administering the vaccine.

The state worked with all three chains to pick which pharmacies would offer shots, with the goal to “make sure that strategically … we’re distributing the (vaccine) equitably,” Emergency Management Director Jared Moskowitz said last week.

So how did they do?

Channel 9 reporter Megan Cruz took hours to break down all 193 pharmacies where seniors can now get vaccinated in Central Florida.

While the locations do appear evenly distributed, some locations require a short drive to get there, such as Taft in Orange County, or Bushnell in Sumter County.

Some local leaders have expressed concerns about some seniors who don’t have access to any transportation. The state has been bringing vaccines to churches in addition to pharmacies. Also, counties such as Orange have mobile vaccination pods.

The earliest appointments at these pharmacies are for Friday. Publix’s online portal opens at 6 a.m. Wednesday.

As for the other pharmacies, you can go to their websites whenever you can to schedule an appointment.
