Woman devastated after she says coyotes killed pygmy goats in Dunnellon

DUNNELLON, Fla. — A Dunnellon woman said coyotes killed her two pygmy goats over the weekend.

Shawna Lambert kept her prized possessions in a pen.

“(I’m) pretty devastated. I was crying most of the day,” she said.

Lambert said she bought Aries and Stella earlier this year, in hopes of breeding them.

“They have been pretty much dog-like. When you bring them in during the storms, they'll climb up on your legs and lick your hands and give you kisses,” Lambert said.

But on Friday night, the goats weren't in their pens, and were not coming when called.

Lambert said she found the goats dead on Saturday; one was in the yard and the other had been carried away.

“I ended up finding her across the street,” she said.

Lambert wasn't the only one who lost animals to coyotes.

Her neighbor across the street said he lost five chickens over the weekend.

He said that coyotes jumped into the pen.
Lambert said she called Florida Fish and Wildlife, who told her Hurricane Hermine flooded out many of the areas where coyotes hunt.
“Their holes are flooded out. So there's not a lot for them out in their areas,” she said.
Lambert said she is worried that she hasn't seen the last of the attacks.
“You don't expect them. You still expect your home to be your safe spot. You don't expect something to come in your yard,” she said.
Lambert said she'll be keeping her dogs in at night and will be bringing her bunny inside full-time.

“She's now staying inside. We are designing a cage inside to let her run around a little bit more,” said Lambert.ambert.
